Sight Words

Sight Words • High Frequency Words • Star Words

These are simply the most commonly occurring words in books. For fluent reading, these words need to be immediately recognisable to children; that is without being sounded out. Improvement in this area requires repetition; practicing of the same words again and again in different ways. So, how can you keep the practice fresh and interesting for your child? Check out our huge list of sight word ideas and activities.

Sight Word Recall Ideas

  • Point and say the word and have child repeat.
  • Point to word and have child identify the word.
  • Only give your child 3 seconds to recall a word. Remember ultimately these are words they will need to read in books while maintaining fluency

Flash Cards

  • Simple recall. Hold the cards, flick through them quickly as your child says them.
  • Spread out flash cards in front of your child, call out a word and they must find it for you.
  • Play ‘Memory’! Make doubles of each word and lay face down. Take turns turning the a card over, saying the word, and working to find its double!
    • Have the words spread out on the ground and use fly swatter to ‘hit’ the said word.
    • Strategically place a few sight words around the house (fridge, toilet door, in front of the mirror, etc.) This is a great strategy for words your child is having particular trouble remembering.

Sight Word Books

A sight word book is a simple book you can make with your child to reinforce sight words, the concept of books in general, and of course to have fun. Use our sight word books worksheets (download below). Have your child cut out the strips of paper, tracing over the words with a pencil. Your child can then cut and paste pictures to finish each sentence. For example, “I can see a little fish“.

Staple the strips together to create their very first sight word book!
